Pronunciation is an important part of learning a new language – it’s especially important when it comes to your speaking and listening skills! When you learn English abroad<\/a> with EC, you’ll definitely hear about ‘vowel sounds’ from your awesome teachers, but let’s take a quick look at long and short vowels right here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s a long vowel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long vowel sound is one that is pronounced the same way as its name, like the A in the word ‘make’ (me\u026ak). In the phonetic alphabet, it’s written as \/e\u026a\/.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s a short vowel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short vowel sound does not sound like the letter’s name, like in the word ‘mad’. In the phonetic alphabet, this sound is written \/a\/. This can be tricky when saying words like ‘beach’ or ‘sheet’, which can sound a lot like some rude words!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short vowel sound (\/a\/): e.g. At<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \/a\/ here is pronounced like \/\u00e6\/, it’s the same sound you will also find in words like apple, back, and plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long vowel sound (\/e\u026a\/): e.g. Ate
<\/strong>Here, the sound is pronounced as the name of the letter, like \/e\u026a\/. You’ll find the same sound in words like same, plane, and snake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short vowel sound (\/e\/): e.g Bet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short \/e\/ sound here sounds like \/\u025b\/, as in words like check, ten, and when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long vowel sound (\/i:\/): e.g. Beat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long ‘e’ sound is pronounced like \/i\u02d0\/, the same sound you’ll find in words like eat, we, and meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short vowel sound (\/i\/): e.g. Bit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This short \/i\/ sound is pronounced \/\u026a\/, like in words kitten, milk, and ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long vowel sound (\/a\u026a\/): e.g. Bite<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long ‘\u012b’ sound here sounds like \/a\u026a\/ and can be spelled in a number of ways, as in words like ice, cry, and high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short vowel sound (\/o\/): e.g. Not<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sound is pronounced like \/\u0252\/, like in words off, cop, and stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long vowel sound (\/\u0259u\/): e.g. Note<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The long \/\u014d\/ sound here can be heard in words like boat, local, and joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short vowel sound (\/u\/): e.g. Cut<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
