One of the biggest worries students have before studying English abroad<\/a> isn’t the lessons, the flights, or whether they’ll remember to pack an adaptor. It’s whether or not they’ll make friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s a totally fair question. Travelling to a new country where you don’t know anyone, where you\u2019re embarking on a new adventure, can feel like a pretty big step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But walk into any EC English Language Centre, and you’ll find students chatting before class, making plans for the weekend and swapping recommendations for the best places to eat nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of your first week, you’ll probably already have people to grab lunch with or explore the city alongside, but to put your mind at ease we\u2019ve got some notes on the subject\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is here for the same reason<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting a conversation is much easier when you already have something in common: learning English overseas<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every student at EC has chosen to study English, improve their confidence, and experience local life in a new country. No matter where in the world you\u2019re coming from, you’re all sharing the same adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, making mistakes is an essential part of learning. Most students quickly realise that speaking with classmates is one of the fastest ways to build confidence, both inside and outside the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The classroom is just the beginning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lessons help bring people together, but friendships don’t stop when class ends. Living life outside the classroom is where the real learning kicks in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, to help with that, EC organises a packed and varied social programme designed to help you experience your new city while getting to know each other. Depending on your destination, that could mean walking tours, museum visits, sporting events, food experiences, beach trips or evenings out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s much easier to get to know someone when you’re exploring London’s markets together, watching the sunset on a sandy beach in Malta or discovering New York for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those shared experiences soon become inside jokes, favourite memories and stories you’ll still be telling long after you’ve gone home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best icebreaker: just say \u2018hi!\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room, or have perfect grammar and pronunciation. Some of the best conversations and strongest relationships start with the simplest questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
