Your reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary can all grow through silent study. But the part of your English you use in meetings and conversations (what we call \u201cEnglish 3\u201d in this article) only improves when you actually speak and get feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says your name.<br>Everyone turns.<br>And the sentence you had ready two seconds ago is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say something. It\u2019s fine. It\u2019s just\u2026smaller than what you meant. Shorter. Flatter. About 60% of the answer you actually had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you go back to your desk and think: I know that word. I\u2019ve known that word for ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do know it. That\u2019s not the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that knowing a word and finding it in two seconds are two completely different skills. And only one of them gets better while you study alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you improve your English without speaking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Short answer: Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary: all of it improves in silence. Millions of people have built excellent English this way. Nobody should tell them to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one part of your English does not improve in silence. It happens to be the part everyone can hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are English 1, English 2 and English 3?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most learners think their English is one number: B1, B2, \u201cnot bad\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s actually three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about your wardrobe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clothes you\u2019d recognise in a shop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clothes you own<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The four things you actually wear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your English works the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your three Englishes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td><strong>What is it<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Where it shows up<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>English 1<\/strong><\/td><td>Words you understand<\/td><td>Reading a report. Watching a film.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>English 2<\/strong><\/td><td>Words you can find help with<\/td><td>Flashcards. Gap-fills. Writing an email slowly. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>English 3<\/strong><\/td><td>Words that arrive on their own<\/td><td>The meeting. The interview. Right now<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">English 1 is always the biggest. English 3 is always the smallest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s normal. It happens in every language, including yours. You understand thousands of words in your own language that you would never actually say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something happens to English 3 that nobody warns you about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is English 3 smaller than English 1?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Six out of ten<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, researchers tested 306 university students in Turkey. They measured two things separately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The words each student understood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The words each student could actually produce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At A1 level, students could produce about half the words they understood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At A2 level, about half again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At B1 level \u2013 a good, working level of English \u2013 they could produce about six words out of every ten.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six out of ten. At the level where most people say:<em> \u201cI\u2019m fine, I just freeze sometimes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that number. It\u2019s the same one from the meeting at the top of this article. <strong>About 60% of what you actually had.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bit that surprises people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the strange part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number does get better as you improve. Your English 3 is slowly catching up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while it catches up, your English 1 is growing too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every book you read. Every film you watch. Every meeting you sit through. All of it feeds the big English as well as the small one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why \u201cI\u2019ll just study harder\u201d so often fails to fix the meeting problem. Studying isn\u2019t wrong. Same people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding English is recognising a face. Speaking English is remembering a name.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you read a report, the words are already there. Your brain says: yes, I know that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone asks you a question, there are no words in front of you. Your brain has to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find the words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put them in order<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say them out loud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026while you\u2019re also listening, watching faces, and feeling the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same words. Completely different job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do learners say is the problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t take my word for it \u2013 ask 5,000 learners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plc.pearson.com\/en-GB\/news-and-insights\/news\/english-skills-have-life-changing-impact-are-seen-key-unlocking-higher-pay\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/plc.pearson.com\/en-GB\/news-and-insights\/news\/english-skills-have-life-changing-impact-are-seen-key-unlocking-higher-pay\">In 2023, Pearson asked 5,000 English learners<\/a> in Japan, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and the US one simple question: Why isn\u2019t your English where you want it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>56% \u2013 \u201cWe studied grammar and vocabulary instead of using English\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50% \u2013 \u201cI didn\u2019t get enough chances to use English outside class\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>46% \u2013 \u201cThere wasn\u2019t enough English spoken in class\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read those again. Not one of them says \u201cI didn\u2019t work hard enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They all say the same thing in different words:<strong> I practised the wrong English.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I just talk to an AI instead of a person?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s 2026. Fair question. Let\u2019s take it seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI speaking partners are genuinely useful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can practise at six in the morning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can repeat the same conversation eleven times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The AI never sighs, never looks at the clock, never makes you feel stupid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If speaking to a person makes you freeze, this is an excellent place to start \u2013 and the research agrees. AI practice lowers speaking anxiety and makes learners more willing to talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But look closely at what that research measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one 2024 study, learners who practised with AI felt calmer and more confident. Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the researchers tested their actual speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No significant difference.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeling ready to speak and speaking better are not the same result. The first one is worth having. It just isn\u2019t the second one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there\u2019s one thing AI will never do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It will never say: \u201cThat sounded colder than you meant.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It won\u2019t misunderstand you the way your colleague in S\u00e3o Paulo misunderstands you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It won\u2019t interrupt you badly, or change the subject because someone walked in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use AI. Open your phone. Record two minutes about what you just read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L<strong>isten back. <\/strong>Count three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Long pauses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sentences you started again<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Words you had just read but couldn\u2019t find<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distance between step 1 and step 3 is your <strong>gap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It isn\u2019t your level. It isn\u2019t on your certificate. But it is the only number that matters when other people are in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people find this uncomfortable. That\u2019s the point. Comfortable practice is what got you here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What exercises build English 3 without a partner?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost all study builds English 1. These four build English 3, and none of them needs another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) The reverse card (5 minutes, 3\u00d7 a week)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is English on the front of your flashcards? Then you\u2019re practising the skill you already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turn them around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>See your language first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say the English out loud before you check.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same cards. Opposite direction. Completely different skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) The cover test (10 minutes, 2\u00d7 a week)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write three sentences you\u2019ll genuinely need this week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read them twice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say them from memory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing gives you unlimited time to think. Saying it takes that time away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That difference is your gap. This attacks it directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) The same five (10 minutes, 2\u00d7 a week)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t meet random English. You meet the same five situations, again and again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The weekly update<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explaining a delay<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disagreeing politely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asking someone to repeat something<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The small talk before the call starts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pick one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Say it out loud.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say it again, shorter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say it again, starting a different way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) The cold start (60 seconds, once a week)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write five questions about your job on five pieces of paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn them over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press record. Sixty seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No preparation. No second attempt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you play it back, don\u2019t hunt for grammar mistakes. Count the pauses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four weeks of this and English 3 will move. It\u2019s a very specific shape:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody interrupts you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody asks the question you weren\u2019t ready for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And nobody tells you what wasn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last one is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of what holds professionals back at work isn\u2019t grammar. The real pattern is <strong>clarity, tone and directness<\/strong> \u2013 not tenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot hear those things in yourself.
