Homestay Overview

Your home-away-from-home experience with EC

Your Neighbourhood

San Diego, with its wonderful Californian climate, relaxed outdoor way of life, and great scenery, offers students a unique opportunity for learning. Get to know your ‘Home’ by exploring some of the most beautiful beaches in California and natural parks where you can hike on trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Your Accommodation

Each family will have its own set of rules, and parents are encouraged to go over these rules with the student upon arrival and/or post them in a common area of the home.

In general, students should communicate evening plans to the family, ask permission for friends to visit, limit home telephone calls to local calls only unless an international card is purchased, keep their rooms tidy, and be very quiet when returning home late.

Housing

Some host families have curfews as well as a time limit for showers. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from school.

Room Options

Each room is naturally lit and has a bed, drawer and closet. Some rooms have a TV and other amenities.

Laundry

Some hosts have washing machines and dryers available for students, and some do not. If available, the student should ask a family member how to operate the machines.

Meal Description

Every meal is fresh and prepared daily. A variety of food is provided, each packed with nutritional value. Host families try to adjust the type of food offered to the students’ tastes and take religious beliefs into consideration when preparing meals. Vegetarians or people with food allergies should specify upon booking.

Some hosts will allow students to cook on their own in their kitchens, but this varies from family to family. Students should always ask before using the kitchen and should clean up after themselves.

Breakfast

Breakfast varies from family to family. It is usually self-service and includes bread, coffee, cereal. Hosts are encouraged to offer students whatever is typical for their home. Students who book half board will eat whatever the family eats. If the host family is dining out, the student will accompany them as a guest.

Dinner

Dinners are usually quite early in the USA, but families will inform the students of the time when they eat. Not all families will sit down and have dinner together every night. The student must inform the host family beforehand should they be late or not having dinner.

Arrangement and Transport

Journey to school

The distance from EC San Diego to Clairemont is up to 1 hour and 20 minutes, University City/UTC 45 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes, Pacific Beach up to 45 minutes, and La Jolla up to 30 minutes. Students are advised to use public transport to commute to school. Times are approximate.

Host Family Locations

About 80% of our host families are in Clairemont, one of the most beautiful and prestigious areas of San Diego. The rest are in the affluent seaside community of La Jolla and neighbouring Pacific Beach, home to one of San Diego’s larger nightlife scenes.

House Rules

  • All students will be given a key to their home.
  • Students should ask their families how to use household items such as window shades, bathroom fixtures, kitchen appliances (microwave, dishwasher), and other equipment.
  • Some homes may have pets. Should students be allergic or prefer not to live with a pet, they should indicate this in their preferences when booking.
  • No smoking is permitted inside the house. If smoking outside, please take care when disposing of cigarette butts as fire is a real hazard in San Diego’s dry climate.
  • Students arriving in EC accommodation between 22.00 and 08.00 may be asked to book alternative accommodation for their first night. This is to ensure the students’ safety on arrival.
  • Students are required to follow the EC Student Code of Conduct; failure to do so can result in termination of the accommodation.

Can I change my host family?

Your host family is assigned according to your requirements. After your arrival, we only change host families if serious complaints occur.

The accommodation is only available for the duration of the course. Accommodation is usually booked from Saturday to Saturday.

Who will I be sharing with if I have chosen the shared-bedroom option?
