Do you think you can answer this riddle?

Is this a well-known riddle in your country? Can you answer it? Let’s see how logical your brain is!

A man lives on the 10th floor of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the elevator (lift) all the way down to the bottom and goes to work. But in the evening…

  • If someone else is in the lift with him, he rides all the way up to the 10th floor.
  • If it’s raining, he also goes straight to the 10th.
  • But on normal days, when he’s alone and it’s dry, he only takes the lift to the 7th floor, then walks up the final 3 flights of stairs to reach his flat.

(Note: Elevator is lift in British English. Apartment is flat in British English)

Why does he do that?

The answer is simple: He’s a short guy

  • In the morning, he can press the ground floor button easily (no problem going down).
  • In the evening, if he’s alone, he can only reach the 7th-floor button, because that’s as high as his arms can reach.
  • If it’s raining, he uses his umbrella to press the button for the 10th floor.
  • If someone else is in the lift, he simply asks them to press the 10th for him.
