Homestay Overview

Your home-away-from-home experience with EC

Your Accommodation

Staying with local hosts is both exciting and rewarding. Homestay providers provide the best insight into how the British live their day-to-day lives. This interaction will help you communicate better, and faster and allow you to pick up words and nuances used in daily situations. Cambridge is a very multicultural city, and a lot of people are originally from different countries and different backgrounds. Living with hosts in Cambridge will give you a great view of all the different cultures and ethnicities that the city has to offer.

Homestays are arranged by EC as well as via our accommodation partners – Hosts International and Homestay Consultancy.

Housing

There is no typical homestay in Cambridge. Some homes are single standing homes; others can be apartments or townhouses.

Room Options

Choose between either a single or double room. For students booking two persons together, you will receive half board status.

Laundry

Bed linen and towels are provided by the homestay host. It is very common for homes to have a designated laundry day. You will be allowed to have one free wash per week.

WiFi

Internet access is available upon request (and if requested, will be free of charge). Telephone access is dependent on the hosts.

Meal Description

Breakfast and dinner are provided daily by the homestay host, who will be happy to prepare both meals, however, lunch is not included in the adult homestay programme. The host will provide room in the fridge and cupboards to store any food that students may purchase.

Hosts make an effort to adjust the type of food offered to the tastes of the students and take religious beliefs into consideration when preparing meals. Vegetarians or people with food allergies should specify their dietary restrictions upon booking so this information can be shared with families prior to arrival.

Breakfast

Breakfast varies from family to family. It is typical in a British home to have a quick, on-the-go breakfast such as toast and a coffee. Students will eat whatever the hosts eat and help set the table or clear up after dinner. Students are encouraged to participate in activities or outings.

Dinner

Dinner time is usually around 6.30pm or 7.00pm, but hosts will inform the student of the time when they eat. Not all sit down and have dinner together every night. It is important that the student informs the hosts beforehand should they be late or not having dinner. If a student misses dinner, they cannot take it for lunch the next day, since lunch is not included in the homestay program.

Arrangement and Transport

Our homestay hosts are happy to assist the students with directions to the school on their first few days in Cambridge to ensure a simple commute.

When will I receive the family profile?

You will receive the profile at least two weeks before your arrival date.

Can I change my host family?

Your host family is assigned according to your requirements. After your arrival, we only change host families if serious complaints occur.

How do you assign the host family?

This is based on availability and any special requirements you might have. Please make sure that all your requests are expressed at the time of the booking.

Can I keep staying at EC accommodation before/after my English course?

The accommodation is only available for the duration of the course. Accommodation is usually booked from Saturday to Saturday.

Who will I be sharing with if I have chosen the shared-bedroom option?

You will be sharing this with another same-gender student. When students share rooms, we try our best to place students from different countries or languages together. Please note that during high season, this cannot be guaranteed.

We offer host family, residence and shared accommodation.

The accommodation can be booked in the following categories:
