Common storm expressions in English (with meanings & examples)

English speakers often use weather words to talk about situations and feelings. Storm expressions are popular in everyday English. Here are some common phrases with storm vocabulary. Try them to make your English sound more natural.

Storm expressions and their meanings

Storm (noun)

Definition: Terrible weather with a lot of rain, snow, wind, etc.

  • Did you hear that storm last night?
  • The storm knocked down many trees.

When something creates a negative reaction, we also say it’s a storm:

  • The new policy caused a storm of protest across the country.

Storm (verb)

Definition: To attack a building or place using violence.

A storm in a teacup

Definition: The calm centre of a storm. Also means the person at the centre of a difficult situation.

Brainstorm

Definition: To think of many ideas quickly, usually in a group.

  • Let’s brainstorm some ideas for the party.
  • We need to brainstorm solutions to this problem.

The calm before the storm

Definition: A period of unusual peace before a difficult or chaotic time begins.

  • The office is very quiet today…it’s the calm before the storm of next week’s deadline.
  • The children are sleeping now, but it’s just the calm before the storm. They’ll wake up soon.

A perfect storm

Definition: A rare combination of events that makes a situation much worse.

  • The company failed due to a perfect storm of bad management and economic problems.
  • It was a perfect storm: my car broke down, I lost my phone, and it started raining.

Weather the storm

Definition: To successfully survive a difficult period or crisis.

  • The small business managed to weather the storm of the pandemic.
  • If we work together, we can weather the storm.
