Synonyms

What is a synonym?

A Synonym is a word that has almost the same meaning as another word.

For example, a synonym for beautiful is stunning

She is a beautiful girl.

She is a stunning girl.

Both beautiful and stunning express admiration for someone’s appearance, but stunning is a more expressive, vivid choice.

Why use synonyms?

Using synonyms helps to expand your vocabulary and gives your speaking and writing more variety and colour.

Learning synonyms is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve your English. It helps you:

  • Avoid repeating the same words
  • Sound more fluent and confident
  • Express your ideas more precisely
  • Write with more style and personality

In the UK, it’s common knowledge that teachers and examiners aren’t big fans of the word “nice“. Why? Because it’s too vague. It doesn’t tell the reader much.

Ex. Was the food nice? Or was it delicious, tasty, flavourful, or even mouth-watering?
