Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot summers, making it an ideal destination for those who love sunshine and sea, and mild winters. With over 300 days of sunshine annually, it is an appealing destination for outdoor activities year-round.

The official currency in Malta is the Euro (€). All major credit cards are widely accepted, although some cards carry transaction charges.The main banks in Malta are Bank of Valletta plc (BOV), HSBC Bank plc, Lombard and Banif.

Tap water

Tap water in Malta is safe to drink, but it may have a slightly different taste due to the island’s desalination process. Bottled water is widely available and preferred by many locals and visitors for drinking. You can use tap water safely for cooking, brushing teeth, and washing. 

Transportation

Getting around Malta is relatively easy due to its compact size. The island has an extensive bus network operated by Malta Public Transport, which services most areas. Taxis services are widely available, and rental cars can be a convenient option for exploring at your own pace. Ferries connect Malta with the islands of Gozo and Comino. Walking or biking is another way to explore Malta’s towns and coastline.

Public buses are the main form of public transport in Malta. The Malta Public Transport bus service runs frequently between major points of interest, and you can purchase single tickets or travel cards. An Explore Card offers unlimited travel for seven days. Buses are affordable, and schedules are frequent in busy areas, though they can be slower in rural locations.

Memberships

Gym – EC offers the students a weekly membership at Cynergi Health & Fitness Club. Membership is heavily subsidised. Students pay only €28 for a full week’s membership. The gym is very close to school and forms part of a 5-star hotel complex. Cynergi offers a variety of aerobic classes, a free-weights hall, resistances and cardio machines, two squash courts, heated indoor pool, saunas and steam bath. The gym is open from Monday to Friday between 06.00 – 22.00. On Saturdays entrance is 06.00 – 20.00. On Sundays entrance is 08.00 – 18.00.

Visa Requirements

Malta is part of the Schengen Area, meaning that short-term visitors from most EU countries and certain other regions do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Non-EU nationals should check Malta’s specific visa requirements. Please contact us for more information. 

Legal Driving Age

The legal driving age in Malta is 18. An international driver#s license may be required if you’re from outside the European Union. Renting a car is possible for those over 21, though some rental agencies may have additional age requirements or fees for younger drivers. 

Alcohol Age

The legal drinking age in Malta is 17, which applies to both purchasing and consuming alcohol in bars and restaurants. 

Smoking Laws

Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public spaces, including bars, restaurants, and public transport. However, designated smoking areas are often available outside these venues. 

Insurance

Free hospital emergency treatment is available for European travellers on production of a valid European Health Insurance card (EHIC). All other nationals are advised to have a comprehensive health insurance.

FAQS about Learning English in Malta

What English courses in Malta are available at EC? 

English language courses for every level

Our English language courses are designed for adult students 16+ years at every level, from A1 Beginner level to C1 Advanced levels. We have year-round courses, with new classes starting every Monday for most courses.

General English is our post popular course. You can choose two options:

General English 20 = 15 hours per week
General English 30 = 22.5 hours per week
General English 30 is our intensive course, it’s 20 core English lessons per week plus 10

Special Focus elective lessons. Special Focus Lessons are extra classes you can choose to improve a specific skill or area – you can choose the area you want to focus on from a range of options.

If you are interested in business classes we have English for Work and Business Mini Group (only six students per class).

We have exam preparation courses for IELTS and Cambridge Exams: B2 Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) and C1 Advanced Certificate (CAE). These courses run at fixed dates throughout the year.

You can combine any English course at EC Malta with One-to-One private lessons. Each One-to-One is 60 minutes and can be taken at any time during your group course.
Mature students aged 30 and above can also choose to study English at our dedicated 30+ school.

Overall, there are two student accommodation options at EC Malta: live with other English students or live with a local host family.

Study English in Malta with a host family
Living with a host family in Malta is a great way to practise your English communication skills every day. This accommodation option gives you daily opportunities to interact with native speakers and enjoy homecooked meals!

Staying in a student residence is a popular accommodation option for adult students (18+) who want more independence during their stay. Located close to school or with good bus links our student residences offer a convenient location with modern facilities. Our English classes have flexible classes per week options. Our most popular course, General English is available as 20 lessons per week (15 hours) or 30 lessons per week (22.5 hours).

We offer a range of options for individual students and closed group classes. As well as General English courses we have programmes for business students, courses for exam preparation, private One-to-One lessons and experienced based programs for mature students (EC Escapes). All students can join our fun and varied activity programme to mix with other international students explore the island.
