Dorp Street House is in Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD). It is within walking distance of Long Street, which has restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs. The house has a warm, welcoming feel and there is a living room where you can relax, watch tv or play games. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a restaurant onsite. The house is an ideal base to experience Cape Town at its best. The Company Gardens and the South African Museum are also just a few streets away and many other tourist attractions such as Table Mountain or the V&A Waterfront are also close by.

Your Accommodation

The house has an antique theme to it, and the décor in the common areas will make anyone feel quite nostalgic! Some of the rooms lead out onto a balcony area where you can have a breath of fresh air or have a view of Table Mountain.

Upon arrival, the house staff will show students to their rooms, hand over keys, provide the student with the house rules and show students how to get to the EC English school.

The Dorp Street Residence does not get load shedding, so always has electricity, even during periods of scheduled electricity blackouts

Room Furnishings

Single bed, Desk and chair, closet, TV, hairdryer, fan, bed linens and towels (changed weekly). Students must bring their own beach towels.

Central heating is not installed but portable heaters and extra blankets are available on request, free of charge.

There are no safes. The owner has a safe on site if the students needs to lock valuables away. They can also use their cupboard as each cupboard is lockable

Common Areas

Communal living area, communal kitchen (fully equipped), and off street parking. There are board games available for students to use at any time.

Laundry and Cleaning

Twice a week deep cleaning service is provided for communal areas, and once a week for rooms. Students are responsible for keeping their own space clean and tidy. Cleaning up is especially important after you have used the kitchen for cooking.

The residence provides an off-site laundry service for students.

House rules

Arrival procedures

The owner of the house meets and greets students. He shows them around the house, to their room, and hands over the keys. He shows students how to get to school one day before their course starts. He offers students sim cards and shows where to find the nearest ATM.

Airport pickup

If you have booked accommodation with EC, you must arrive at the airport between 08:00 and 20:00. Late/early arrivals may be asked to book alternative accommodation. Please provide your flight number, arrival time, terminal and airport of origin by a minimum 2 weeks in advance.

You will meet an EC transportation representative holding an EC Cape Town sign at the arrivals terminal information desk. If after 10 minutes you cannot see the EC representative, just call 084 8866342 (from the information desk or a mobile phone). (Useful phrases to use: Hi, my name is [your name]. I am from [your home country]. My student number is [#####]. I cannot find my EC representative. I am at the information desk).

If you have missed your flight or if your flight is delayed, you should notify EC by calling +27 (0) 84 8866342 (from the information desk or a mobile phone) to rearrange your transfer time and avoid additional cost. (Useful phrases to use: My name is [your name]. I am from [your country]. My student number is [#####] and my flight has been changed. My new flight number is [####] arriving at [time]}.

Other ways to get to your residence

E-hailing services such as Uber or Bolt, airport taxi companies and the MyCiti bus are available from the airport to get to the city centre.

Luggage drop-off is allowed. Students can leave luggage with the residence manager until departure to the airport or if the student is going away for a tour.

House Rules

Students must be 18+ to choose this accommodation.
Mixed gender.
Every resident has to sign a Shared Apartment Agreement, before they can receive the key of the residence.
Visitors are allowed, but they may not stay overnight. Students need to ensure guests are well-known to them and that they do not disturb anyone else in the residence.
Smoking is not permitted inside the residence.
Students arriving in EC accommodation between 22.00 – 08.00 may be asked to book alternative accommodation for their first night. This is to ensure student’s safety on arrival.
While we promote and support diversity, we cannot guarantee language mix. However, we always encourage students to use English to communicate, be respectful and inclusive of others
provides a clean living space for all students and expects a basic level of respect from all students. For example, if something is dropped, pick it up; do not leave clothes and belongings on the floor; place rubbish and leftovers in a garbage bag
Students are required to follow EC Student Code of Conduct, failure to do so can result in termination of the accommodation.

Cancellations

Cancellation prior to arrival

Students cancelling or postponing 14 days or less prior to their accommodation dates will be charged a two-week accommodation fee at the rate quoted in the price list for the accommodation booked and the accommodation placement fee.

Cancellation after arrival

Students leaving their accommodation must give notice in writing 4 weeks prior to termination. If the 4-week notice period is not provided a cancellation fee equal to 4 weeks of the accommodation cost will apply. After deducting the price of accommodation used at the rate quoted in the price list, including the required notice period charged at the same rate, students will be refunded the remaining accommodation costs.

You will be sharing your room with another EC student of the same gender. When students are sharing rooms, we try our best to place students together from different countries or languages, although this is not always guaranteed.
