Homestay Overview

Your home-away-from-home experience with EC

Your Neighbourhood

Montreal is a multicultural and lively city that offers everything you could want from a cosmopolitan city. You’ll find an abundance of fun nightlife, beautiful architecture, great museums, galleries, and much more.

Your Accommodation

Staying with a local family is both exciting and rewarding. Host families provide the best insight into Canadian families’ day-to-day lives. This interaction with a family will help you communicate better and faster and allow you to pick up words and nuances used in daily situations.

Housing

There is no typical homestay in Montreal. Some homes are single-story; others can be apartments, townhouses, or multifamily dwellings. Living with a family will give you a great view of all the different cultures and ethnicities the city offers.

Room Options

You can choose between a single or twin room. Each room is furnished with a bed, desk, and closet. Rooms and living areas must be kept neat and tidy. You will also have access to a shared bathroom. Private bathrooms are also an option, upon request and availability.

Laundry

The host family provides bed linen and towels. The family will be happy to launder the sheets and towels once a week. You are responsible for doing your own personal laundry. Students must purchase their own laundry detergent. It is very common for families to have a designated laundry day.

WiFi

Internet access is available upon request, and telephone access is dependent on the host family.

Meal Description

Host families make an effort to adjust the type of food offered to the students’ tastes and consider religious beliefs when preparing meals. Vegetarians or people with food allergies should specify their dietary restrictions upon booking so this can be shared with families prior to arrival.

Breakfast and dinner are provided daily by the homestay host, who will be happy to prepare both meals. The host will provide room in the fridge and pantry to store any food that students may purchase.

Breakfast

Breakfast varies from family to family. It is typical for Canadians to have a quick, on-the-go breakfast such as toast and coffee. Hosts are encouraged to offer students whatever the family typically eats. Students will eat whatever the family eats and help set the table or clear up after dinner. Students are encouraged to participate in family activities or outings.

Dinner

Dinner time is usually around 6 to 7 pm, but families will inform the students of the time when they eat. Not all families will sit down and have dinner together every night. The student must inform the host family beforehand should they be late or not having dinner. If a student misses dinner, they cannot take it for lunch the next day, since lunch is not included in the homestay programme.

Arrangement and Transport

Journey to school

Montreal is a huge city with a very simple and efficient transit system. Our homestays all live within 90 minutes of travel time to EC Montreal, averaging 45 – 55 minutes.

EC Montreal at 1610 St Catherine Street West. The closest subway station is Guy-Concordia Station on the green subway line.

STM transit fare:

  • $3.75 for one trip
  • $7 for two trips
  • $30 for one week (Monday to Sunday)
  • $97 for one month

Host Family Locations

All of our homestays are close to a bus or subway station. It is usual to take a few different modes of transportation to get to your destination (such as a bus and subway). Our homestay hosts are happy to assist the students to the school during their first few days to ensure a simple commute.

FAQS

Can I keep staying at my student accommodation in Montreal after my EC English course?

The accommodation is only available for the duration of the course. Accommodation is usually booked from Saturday to Saturday.

For my homestay student accommodation in Montreal, how do you assign the host family?

This is based on availability and any special requirements you might have. Please make sure that all your requests are expressed at the time of the booking.

Which type of student accommodation in Montreal should I choose?

Choosing a Montreal accommodation type depends on your lifestyle preferences. If you want to practice your English or French with a local family over homecooked meals, you should consider a homestay with local Vancouver hosts. If you want more independence and connection with other students, a shared student apartment may be the perfect choice.
