EC English and CEL team up in California

Exciting updates for our schools in Los Angeles and San Diego

We have some great news to share! EC English is partnering with the College of English Language (CEL) to provide students in California with an even better experience.

CEL is a trusted language school with many years of experience, and, like EC, it is known for its quality teaching and welcoming student communities.

What is changing?

From 29 September 2025, EC and CEL will bring their student communities together in two amazing locations:

Los Angeles

CEL students will join our Los Angeles English school in Santa Monica. The Santa Monica neighbourhood is one of the most beautiful areas of Los Angeles, close to the beach, famous landmarks, and plenty of entertainment options.

San Diego

All EC San Diego students will now enjoy classes at CEL’s Pacific Beach campus. This school is just a short walk from the beach and surrounded by cafés, shops, and a lively atmosphere.

Building stronger English schools

Andrew Mangion, Executive Chairman and CEO at EC, said:

“There is a time for competition and a time for collaboration and now is definitely a time for collaboration in the US market, which has seen a series of major challenges since 2016. Both CEL and EC share the same vision that this move will make for two fuller, healthier and happier schools in San Diego and LA rather than four schools that are all competing for a drastically reduced marketplace. We are confident that CEL students and agents will find a happy new home at EC Santa Monica in LA and that EC’s students choosing San Diego will find the same at CEL’s school in Pacific Beach.”

Chris Thebing, Managing Partner, College of English Language, added:

“This cooperation further strengthens our flagship school in San Diego and demonstrates the positive impact of collaboration in international education. By joining forces in San Diego and Los Angeles around one strong campus in each city, together with EC, we are building even more diverse and dynamic student communities while ensuring that both schools remain true to their identities. For students, it means a richer experience inside and outside the classroom; for our partners, a clearer and stronger choice when promoting California as a leading study destination.” As the international education industry evolves, collaborations like this are increasingly important. By consolidating into strong, high-quality campuses, EC and CEL are securing stability, growth, and a brighter future for students, agents, and partners. Together, EC and CEL look forward to welcoming even more students to California and delivering outstanding learning experiences.”

Why is this good news for you?

By focusing on one strong school in each city, EC and CEL can offer:

Bigger and more diverse student communities: meet new people from all over the world.

High-quality facilities: study in bright, modern classrooms with great resources.

Great locations: enjoy two of California’s most famous beachside neighbourhoods.

Fun and social activities: make friends and explore California together.

A better California experience

This cooperation between EC and CEL is designed to give you more: more classmates to connect with, more opportunities to practice English, and more ways to enjoy life in California. From lessons you will love to fun social activities, you’ll experience the best of California while improving your English skills.

Choose the sunny, laid-back lifestyle of Pacific Beach in San Diego or the cool, energetic vibe of Santa Monica in Los Angeles, and enjoy the same high standards of teaching, support, and care that EC is famous for.

We’re excited about this new chapter in California and look forward to welcoming you on your English learning journey in San Diego or Los Angeles!
